Frequently asked questions
Is this word counter free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no limits and no watermark.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is counted right in your browser — your text never leaves your device, so it's safe to use for private or confidential writing.
How is a word counted?
A word is any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, which matches how most word counters (including word processors) count. Two spaces in a row don't create an empty word.
How is reading time estimated?
It assumes an average silent reading speed of about 200 words per minute, so it's a rough guide rather than an exact figure.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both. You'll see a total character count including spaces and a separate count with spaces removed. Emoji and accented letters each count as a single character.
