About these audio tools
Practising an instrument, testing a pair of speakers, trimming a voice note or working out the tempo of a track — all small jobs that somehow require downloading an app full of ads and permissions.
These run on the Web Audio API in the tab you already have open. Tones and clicks are synthesised in real time rather than streamed, recording asks only for the microphone, and files you drop in for trimming or pitch shifting are decoded locally and never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install anything or grant permissions?
Nothing to install. Only the recorder and the frequency visualiser ask for microphone access, and that permission is requested by the browser when you start, not before.
Are my recordings or audio files uploaded?
No. Recording is captured to memory and saved straight to your device, and files you open for trimming or pitch shifting are decoded in the browser.
Why is there no sound until I click?
Browsers block audio until you interact with the page, so the audio engine only starts on your first click or tap. Also check that the tab isn't muted.
Can I damage my speakers or hearing with the tone generator?
Start at a low volume, especially with high frequencies and square waves, which carry much more energy than they sound like they do. Sustained loud tones are hard on both ears and tweeters.
What format do recordings download in?
WebM, which every modern browser records natively and most editors accept. Convert it afterwards if you need MP3 or WAV specifically.
