Frequently asked questions
Why are there no voices, or only one?
The voice list comes from your operating system's speech engine. macOS and iOS have many built-in voices; Windows has fewer by default but you can install more from Settings → Accessibility → Speech. Android/Chrome on desktop typically has one Google voice. Try refreshing the page after installing new voices.
Can I download the audio as an MP3?
No — the Web Speech API plays audio directly through the OS speech engine without exposing an audio stream to the browser. To save the output, use system audio capture software (e.g., Audacity, OBS, or QuickTime's screen recording) while the tool is speaking.
Why does the voice sound robotic?
The quality depends on your OS voice engine. macOS 'Enhanced' voices and Google voices (available in Chrome) sound much more natural than the default compact voices. Install a high-quality voice in your OS settings for better results.
Does my text leave my device?
It depends on the voice. Voices marked 'Online' or similar in Chrome use a Google server for synthesis. Voices without this tag are local. Local voices never send text anywhere. Check the voice name — macOS and offline Windows voices are always local.
The speech stops or resets mid-sentence — why?
Some browsers (especially Chrome on Android) have a bug where SpeechSynthesis pauses after roughly 15 seconds. This is a known browser bug with no reliable workaround in the browser itself. Try Firefox or Safari on desktop for longer texts.
