About the BPM Tapper

Tap any key or button in time with a song to instantly calculate the BPM (beats per minute). No audio, no mic — pure timing in your browser.

How to use the BPM Tapper

  1. 1Click the large Tap button (or press Space / Enter) in time with the beat of any song.
  2. 2After 3 taps the BPM appears. Keep tapping for a more accurate reading — the average of all recent taps is used.
  3. 3Taps older than 3 seconds are automatically discarded so you can restart by simply pausing.
  4. 4Click 'Reset' to clear all taps and start fresh.
  5. 5Use the 'Open in Metronome' link to set your online metronome to the detected tempo.

Frequently asked questions

How many taps do I need for an accurate result?

Three taps give a rough reading. Six to eight taps over two bars of music typically converge to within ±1 BPM of the actual tempo. The display shows how many taps have been counted.

Why does the BPM jump around on the first few taps?

With only 2–3 taps the average is based on very few intervals, so a slightly early or late tap has a large effect. The reading stabilises as you add more taps.

The number looks double what I expect — why?

You may be tapping every eighth note instead of every quarter note (beat). Try tapping once per bar instead of once per beat, then multiply the result by your time signature numerator.

What is the difference between BPM Tapper and the Metronome?

BPM Tapper is passive — it only measures tempo from your taps, no audio. The Metronome plays an audible click at a set tempo. Use the Tapper to discover the BPM of a song, then set the Metronome to that BPM to practise in time.
