Frequently asked questions
Is this character counter free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no limits and no watermark.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser — your text never leaves your device.
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, spaces count in the main total. There's also a separate count with all whitespace removed, so you can see both figures at once.
How are emoji and accented letters counted?
Each one counts as a single character in the main total, however many code points it is built from — a family emoji is one character, not eight. That's why the figure can differ from tools that count raw code units.
What are the built-in limits for?
They're the lengths people write to: 280 for an X (Twitter) post, about 60 for an SEO page title and about 160 for a meta description. The meters show how close you are to each.
Why does the X (Twitter) meter show a different number?
Because X doesn't count characters the way everyone else does. It weights them: Chinese, Japanese, Korean and emoji each cost two, and every link costs a flat 23 regardless of length. The X meter follows those rules, so it tells you what X will actually accept — 200 emoji look like 200 characters but are 400 to X.
