What is a UUID?
A universally unique identifier — a 128-bit value written as 36 characters, like 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000. They can be generated anywhere without coordination and still never collide in practice, which makes them ideal as database keys and request IDs.
What's the difference between UUID v4 and v7?
v4 is fully random. v7 starts with the current timestamp, so ids sort by creation time — which makes database indexes faster. Use v7 for new database keys, v4 when ids must not reveal when they were created.
Are these UUIDs really unique?
Statistically, yes. With 122 random bits, you would need to generate about a billion UUIDs per second for decades to reach even a 50% chance of one collision.
Are the UUIDs generated on a server?
No — they are generated in your browser with its cryptographically secure random number generator, and never sent anywhere. Nobody else sees them.
Can I use these UUIDs in production?
Yes. They follow RFC 9562 (which supersedes RFC 4122), the same standard your database or language library implements.
