Frequently asked questions
What is URL encoding?
URLs only allow a limited set of characters, so everything else is written as percent-codes — a space becomes %20, an ampersand %26. It's also called percent-encoding.
Is my URL sent to a server?
No — encoding and decoding run entirely in your browser, so it's safe to paste URLs containing tokens or private parameters.
Should I pick “single value” or “full URL”?
Use single value for one piece of data going into a URL, like a search query or redirect target — it encodes every special character, including / and &. Use full URL when you have a complete address and only want illegal characters (like spaces) encoded without breaking its structure.
Why does my decoded text show a % error?
A % in percent-encoded text must be followed by two hex digits. If your input has a bare % sign, it isn't valid encoded text — encode the raw % as %25 first.
Does this handle emoji and non-English text?
Yes — characters are encoded as UTF-8, the web standard, so emoji and every script decode back exactly as entered.
