About the Signature Cropper

Turn a photo or scan of your signature into a clean transparent PNG — crop it, remove the white background and download, ready for forms and documents.

How to use the Signature Cropper

  1. 1Sign on plain white paper, photograph or scan it, then drop the image in here — iPhone HEIC photos work too.
  2. 2Drag the selection box around your signature; it doesn't need to be tight, because empty space is trimmed off automatically.
  3. 3Leave it on Auto, and nudge the sensitivity if any paper shows or the ink fades.
  4. 4Check the preview on the checkerboard, then click Download for a transparent PNG you can drop straight into forms and documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is this signature tool free?

Yes — completely free with no sign-up and no watermark. Crop and clean up as many signatures as you like.

Is my signature uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser — your signature never leaves your device and nothing is stored on our servers, which matters for something as sensitive as a signature.

How does the background removal work?

Auto judges every pixel against the paper immediately around it rather than against one fixed brightness. That's what lets it cope with a phone photo, where the paper is brighter near the window and darker under your hand — a single cutoff often can't separate shadowed paper from brightly-lit ink, but a local one can. The sensitivity slider sets how much darker than its surroundings a pixel has to be to count as ink.

When should I use Manual instead?

Manual applies one brightness cutoff to the whole image. It's a good fit for a flat scan with perfectly even lighting, and it's predictable — but on a photograph with any shadow across the paper, Auto almost always gives a cleaner result.

Why does it say nothing is left?

The setting is removing your ink along with the paper. Lower the sensitivity in Auto, or lower the threshold in Manual, and the signature will come back.

What format is the downloaded signature?

A PNG with a transparent background, so it sits cleanly on any document or form without a white box around it. The preview sits on a checkerboard so you can see exactly what is transparent before you download.

Can I set an exact width for the signature?

Yes — enter an output width in pixels and the signature is scaled to it, keeping its proportions. Leave it blank to keep the cropped size. Combined with the automatic trim, that gives you a tightly-cropped signature at exactly the size a form asks for.

How do I get the cleanest result?

Sign in dark ink on plain white paper and photograph it straight-on. Auto handles uneven lighting, so a shadow across the page is no longer a problem — but the higher the contrast between ink and paper, the cleaner the edges will be.
