About the Background Remover

Remove the background from a photo automatically and get a transparent PNG — runs entirely in your browser with AI, no upload and no sign-up.

How to use the Background Remover

  1. 1Drop in a photo, paste one, or click to browse — JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC all work, and the photo is processed on your device.
  2. 2The first photo also downloads the AI model, with a progress bar so you can see how far along it is. After that it's cached and later photos are much faster.
  3. 3Preview the cut-out on a checkerboard, so you can see exactly where the transparency falls.
  4. 4Download a transparent PNG, or WebP for a much smaller file with the same transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Is this background remover free?

Yes — completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you process.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The AI model runs entirely in your browser — your photos never leave your device, unlike most background removers that upload to a server. The model file itself is downloaded once from the model provider's CDN so it can run locally; that request carries no part of your photo.

Why does the first image take a while?

The first time you use the tool it downloads the AI model to your browser (a few megabytes), and the progress bar shows exactly how much is left. After that it's cached by your browser, so later images skip straight to the cut-out.

What kind of images work best?

Photos with a clear subject — people, products, pets — against a reasonably distinct background give the cleanest cut-outs. Very busy or low-contrast backgrounds are harder.

It said it couldn't download the model — what now?

That's a network problem rather than a problem with your photo. An ad blocker, a company network or a dropped connection can all block the model download. Check your connection, pause any blocker for this page, and use Try again — your photo stays loaded.

Should I download PNG or WebP?

Both keep the transparent background. PNG is the safest choice and opens everywhere. WebP produces a much smaller file with the same transparency and is supported by all modern browsers and design tools — pick it if file size matters.

What format is the result?

An image with a transparent background — PNG by default, or WebP if you choose it — so you can place your subject on any colour or design. Use the Background Changer if you want to drop it onto a solid colour.
