About the Background Changer

Swap a photo's background for a solid colour like white or blue — perfect for passport photos and product shots, all in your browser with no upload.

How to use the Background Changer

  1. 1Drop in a photo, paste one, or click to browse — JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC all work, and it's processed on your device.
  2. 2The background is removed automatically with AI, with a progress bar while the model downloads on first use.
  3. 3Pick a new background colour — white and light blue are what most passport and visa applications ask for.
  4. 4Choose a format, check the file size on the button, and download.

Frequently asked questions

Is this background changer free?

Yes — completely free with no sign-up and no watermark.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The AI runs entirely in your browser — your photos never leave your device. The model file itself is downloaded once from its provider's CDN so it can run locally; no part of your photo is sent with it.

Can I use this for a passport photo?

Yes — pick a plain white or light-blue background, which most passport and visa applications require. Combine it with the Passport Photo Maker to also get the exact size, head position and a printable sheet.

Which format should I download?

Once the background is a solid colour there's no transparency left to preserve, so JPG or WebP will be dramatically smaller than PNG at the same visible quality — useful when an upload form caps the file size. PNG stays available if you want a lossless copy.

Why does the first photo take longer?

The first run downloads the AI model to your browser, and the progress bar shows exactly how much is left. It's then cached, so changing the colour afterwards is instant and later photos skip straight to the cut-out.

What if the edges look rough?

Results are best with a clear subject against a distinct background, and soft hair edges are the hardest case for any automatic tool. You may also see a faint rim of the original background colour along those soft edges — semi-transparent pixels keep some of the colour they were photographed against, so a green wall can leave a slight green fringe on white. Good, even lighting and a background that contrasts with your hair and clothes both help a lot.
