About the PAN & Aadhaar Validator
Check the format of any PAN (structure + entity type) or Aadhaar (Verhoeff checksum) — a client-side format check, no government database lookup.
How to use the PAN & Aadhaar Validator
- 1Choose the PAN tab or the Aadhaar tab depending on what you want to check.
- 2Type or paste the number — Aadhaar spaces are stripped automatically.
- 3Click Check to run the format and checksum validation instantly.
- 4A green banner means the format is correct; a red banner shows exactly what is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What does PAN validation check?
PAN (Permanent Account Number) must follow the pattern AAAAA0000A — five letters, four digits, one letter. The 4th character indicates the entity type (P = Individual, C = Company, H = HUF, etc.) and the 5th is the first letter of the holder's surname or entity name. This tool checks the format and decodes the entity type; it does not connect to the Income Tax database.
What does Aadhaar validation check?
Aadhaar numbers use a Verhoeff checksum — a mathematical algorithm that can detect most transcription errors. A passing checksum means the number has the right structure; it doesn't guarantee the number is actually enrolled with UIDAI.
What is the Verhoeff algorithm?
Verhoeff is a checksum method based on the dihedral group D5. It catches all single-digit errors and all adjacent-digit transpositions — making it more reliable than the simpler Luhn algorithm used by credit cards. UIDAI uses it as the Aadhaar check digit.
Is this a government database lookup?
No — this tool is entirely client-side. Nothing is sent to any server, government portal, or third party. It is a format and checksum checker only.
