Frequently asked questions
What are HTTP status codes?
HTTP status codes are three-digit numbers returned by a web server to indicate the result of a request. The first digit defines the class: 1xx informational, 2xx success, 3xx redirection, 4xx client error, 5xx server error.
What is the difference between 301 and 302?
301 Moved Permanently tells clients and search engines the resource has moved for good — they should update their bookmarks and pass full SEO value to the new URL. 302 Found is a temporary redirect — the original URL remains canonical.
When should I use 404 vs 410?
Use 404 Not Found when the resource might return in the future. Use 410 Gone when the resource has been deliberately removed and will not return — this signals search engines to deindex the page faster.
What causes a 503 error?
503 Service Unavailable means the server is temporarily unable to handle the request, usually due to overload or scheduled maintenance. It should include a Retry-After header when the downtime is known.
