Frequently asked questions
What is a hash?
A fixed-length fingerprint of your input. The same text always produces the same hash, but even a one-letter change produces a completely different one — which makes hashes ideal for verifying integrity.
Is my text sent to a server?
No — hashes are computed in your browser with the Web Crypto API. Nothing you type leaves your device.
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is the standard choice today. SHA-512 offers a longer digest for extra margin. SHA-1 is broken for security purposes — use it only when an older system requires it.
Can I reverse a hash to get the original text?
No — hashing is one-way by design. The only way to "reverse" one is to guess inputs until one matches, which is why strong, unique passwords matter.
Why is there no MD5 option?
Browsers' built-in Web Crypto API doesn't include MD5 because it's been cryptographically broken for years. If a legacy system demands MD5, treat it as a checksum, not security.
Are these hashes salted?
No — this computes the plain digest of exactly what you type, so it matches the output of sha256sum and other standard tools. Salting is something you add when storing passwords.
