Frequently asked questions
What is a GSTIN?
A GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is a 15-character alphanumeric code assigned to every GST-registered business in India. The first 2 digits are the state code, the next 10 are the PAN, followed by an entity number, a default 'Z', and a checksum character.
What does this tool actually check?
It checks: (1) that the GSTIN is exactly 15 characters; (2) that the format matches the GST Act pattern (2 digits + 10 PAN chars + 3 suffix chars); (3) that the state code is a recognised code; and (4) that the final checksum character matches the MOD-11 algorithm defined in the GST Act. It does not connect to any government database.
What is the checksum algorithm used?
The GST Act specifies a MOD-11 checksum over a 36-character set (0–9 and A–Z). Each character is multiplied alternately by factors 1 and 2, the products are reduced by digit-summing, and the result modulo 36 gives the check character.
Does this tool connect to the GSTN portal?
No — this is a purely client-side format and checksum validator. It does not query the GSTN database, so it cannot confirm whether a business is actively registered or has been cancelled.
