Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FD and RD?

A Fixed Deposit (FD) is a lump-sum investment locked in for a fixed period. A Recurring Deposit (RD) is a monthly savings scheme where you invest a fixed amount each month for a fixed period. Both earn interest at a fixed rate.

What compounding frequency do Indian banks use for FDs?

Most Indian banks compound interest quarterly. Some post office schemes compound annually. Select the frequency your bank specifies to get the most accurate result.

How is RD interest calculated?

Each monthly instalment earns compound interest from its deposit date until maturity. The calculator uses the standard formula: M = R × [(1+r)ⁿ − 1] / (1 − (1+r)^(−1/3)), where r is the quarterly rate.

Is TDS deducted in this calculator?

No — this shows gross maturity value before any TDS (Tax Deducted at Source). For FD interest over ₹40,000 per year (₹50,000 for senior citizens), banks deduct 10% TDS.
