About the Add Border
Add a coloured border or frame around your image and round the corners — pick the width, colour and radius, all in your browser with no upload.
How to use the Add Border
- 1Drop in an image, paste one, or click to browse — it's edited on your device.
- 2Choose whether to keep the photo's shape or pad it out to a square, then set the border width and colour.
- 3Add rounded corners if you like — the photo and the frame round together, and with no border the corners become transparent.
- 4Pick a format and click Download to save the framed image.
Frequently asked questions
Is this border tool free?
Yes — completely free with no sign-up and no watermark.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The border is added entirely in your browser — your image never leaves your device.
Can I round the corners of an image?
Yes — increase the corner radius. The photo's own corners round, and when there's a border its outside edge curves with them so the frame stays an even thickness the whole way round. With no border the rounded corners are transparent, so a PNG or WebP sits cleanly on any background.
Why is the border set as a percentage?
So one setting means the same thing on every photo. A 20 pixel border is a thick slab on a 400 pixel thumbnail and an invisible hairline on a 6000 pixel phone photo. The slider is a share of the shorter edge and shows you the pixel value it works out to.
Can I make a square image for Instagram?
Yes — switch the shape to 'Pad to square'. The photo is centred on a square canvas filled with your border colour, so a landscape or portrait shot fits a square grid without being cropped or stretched.
Which format should I save as?
PNG if the corners are rounded and you want them transparent, or WebP, which keeps transparency at a much smaller size. If nothing is transparent — a plain rectangular border — JPG or WebP will be dramatically smaller than PNG for the same photo. JPG has no transparency at all, so rounded corners get filled with white; the tool says so before you download.
Does adding a border change the image size?
The border adds to the outside, so the saved image is larger than the original by the border width on each side, and padding to a square adds more on the two shorter edges. The photo itself keeps its full resolution — the dimensions shown under the preview are what you'll get.
