About the Color Palette Generator

Generate a 5-colour palette from a seed colour (complementary, analogous, triadic and more) or extract dominant colours from any image — copy hex/RGB/HSL or download as a PNG swatch sheet.

How to use the Color Palette Generator

  1. 1In 'From Colour' mode, pick a seed colour and choose a scheme type — Complementary, Analogous, Triadic, etc.
  2. 2Use the quick preset dots to jump to popular seed colours, then adjust the scheme.
  3. 3Switch to 'From Image' mode and upload any photo — the tool extracts the 5 most dominant colours using k-means clustering.
  4. 4Click any swatch's copy icon for the hex, or click the RGB/HSL row to copy that format.
  5. 5Use Copy All to grab all five hex codes at once, or click PNG to download a swatch sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What colour schemes are available?

Complementary (opposite hue), Analogous (adjacent hues ±30/60°), Triadic (three hues 120° apart), Split-complementary (two colours flanking the complement), Tetradic (four hues 90° apart) and Monochromatic (same hue, varied lightness).

How does the image colour extraction work?

The image is scaled down and sampled, then a k-means clustering algorithm (k=5, 25 iterations) groups the pixel colours and returns the centroid of each cluster — the five most representative colours. Transparent pixels are ignored.

Is my uploaded image sent to a server?

No — the image is processed entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. It never leaves your device.

What is the PNG swatch sheet?

Clicking the PNG button downloads a 1000×280 px image with your five swatches side by side, each labelled with its hex, RGB and HSL values — useful for design presentations, style guides or sharing with clients.
